International Independent Learner

Thank you for getting in touch. Yes, children can take part independently of a school.

There are seven levels of booklet; one for each year of the junior school (age 5ish – 11ish). Thereafter, there are two more levels, which don’t have a booklet and are evidenced online. That takes children up to the age when they can begin their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.

The levels are all age-appropriate and progressive so children don’t start at the beginning. Instead, they start at the level appropriate to their stage at school.

In each booklet, there is a selection of life skills challenges and four cultural ones from which your children will each need to pick ten.

For the booklet, the certificate and the badge, it costs the equivalent of £20GBP for each level.

It would be great if your child took their booklet into school, if they go to a school, as some of the challenges would benefit from having an audience eg. for Drama, depending on the age of the child, they may be asked to read a story to an infant class. For Computer Skills, they may be asked to make a PowerPoint-style of presentation to share with the class.

Doing that could mean that their teachers decide to offer the Award to the whole school and your child could pave the way! Alternatively, if your child is home-schooled, it may be that you could look to your community for opportunities to share and present.
